I know the job market is tight, so as a public service announcement, I wanted to post this fantastic job opportunity to try and spin for a one of the most challenging spin-jobs in California politics: Press Deputy for CM Jose Huizar. (There's a lot to spin and a lot to keep covered up. It's more than most people's conscious could take. Just aks the 15 other people who couldn't take it so far this past year.)
Someone call Vh1...this would be a great reality show: "Becoming Jose Huizar"
JOB DESCRIPTION
PRESS DEPUTY
Office of Los Angeles City Cofferskimmer José Huizar, CD 14 Piece of the City Pie
Description
This position of press deputy in the Office of Councilmember Weaslear will be responsible for handling media relations for Council District 14, (spinning Zuma Dogg's East L.A. Annex -- and aksing people to "step across the street where we can discuss this matter further (as jackets fly off, and sleeves roll up). Which includes the City Hall area (Adjacent to Skid Row/check Thomas Guide for location), as well as the communities in and around Eagle Rock (where CM lives), El Sereno and Boyle Heights (The blood for the CRA/Huizaraigosa vampire). This position will report to the director of policy and communications. [The person who figures out new and creative ways to funnel money away from the community and into CM's coffers.] The press deputy will work collaboratively to develop and execute proactive media strategies and tactics that advance Councilman Huizar's objectives for improving the communities he represents as well as the city of Los Angeles. [How to keep his ass one step ahead of the Feds.]
Duties
• Help build a proactive media relations and outreach program, with particular emphasis on public safety [how to look concerned and what to say to the community as you continue to approve ordinances that undermine public safety and create public hazard], government accountability [make sure there still isn't any], efficiency and transparency [hey...not fair, why dump these new projects on the new guy], community and youth improvement [at least Huizar isn't LAUSD Prez anymore...that's an improvement for the schools and kids], and economic development [approve any developer project if they are economically developing my Council office.]
• Earn media coverage of the Councilman by developing and pitching newsworthy story ideas that advance his community objectives. [Oh, Zuma Dogg would be perfect. At least the guy knows how to "earn" media coverage. Although I never really waited around to "earn" it. Maybe that's why Huizar's media coverage ain't 1/100th of ZD's these past two years.]
• Provide media/communications support to the councilmember as well as coordinate with headquarters and district office staff. [But be careful what you say to him...no criticism or anything he doesn't want to hear please. And please have his headshots already out of the manilla envelopes and arranged on table when he walks into the room.]
• Develop integrated media and community outreach strategies [how to keep them out-reached and out-of-the-way], including working with the Councilmember and staff to determine priority issues [which ones bring in the most money] that require support beyond traditional media activities. [How we will have to use "creative legislation" to generate new and shadier revenue streams.]
• Develop, draft and distribute news advisories and releases, PR materials, press kits, fact sheets and byline articles, including op-eds and letters. [Spin Zuma Dogg and Mayor Sam all day and night. Fiction writers encouraged to apply.]
• Create compelling written materials such as briefing notes and talking points. {Cause the CM cannot think or speak on his feet.]
• Cultivate relationships with reporters and provide useful, timely information on issues affecting the city and Council District 14, as well as create opportunities for the councilmember or other appropriate staff to weigh-in on important matters affecting the city and the district. [Make sure you are charming and keep the media neutered and make sure they are willing to print damage control/PR spin when the mayor needs you to.]
• Organize news conferences, meetings, luncheons, and other events with media, government officials or others. [This is the most important part of the job description. Besides spinning on Mayor Sam.]
• Work with staff to develop integrated communication strategies, including earned media, paid media, events, electronic communications, etc. [Work with staff on keeping their stories straight and keeping CM's name out of it. Directive #1 is: "Keep his name out of it!"]
• Tracking and evaluating the effectiveness of advocacy communications strategies both in City Hall as well as in the district offices. [Monitoring Zuma's Blog and Mayor Sam.]
• Performing other duties as assigned. [See: Darkness on the Edge of Town]
Requirements
• Superior organizational and multi-tasking ability, along with excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Bilingual in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
• Minimum of three-to-five years experience in a communications, media relations or public relations role, including press secretary, manager in general media organization, or in public affairs is strongly desired.
• Demonstrated success in developing and managing media relationships and proven experience in disseminating information using various media, including newspaper, magazine, radio, television, internet and other.
• Experience in government, particularly in an elected official's office, is preferred but not required. [That way you already know all the shady angle and how to hide the corruption.]
MEANWHILE...THE LIST ROLLS ON...WHO THE HELL DOES THIS GUY THINK HE'S HIRING FOR...HILLARY CLINTON. DAMN, JOSE...FOR WHAT YOU ARE PAYING, CAN YOU KEEP ON BEING THIS PICKY? DAMN, BRO...NO WONDER YOU TURN OVER STAFF LIKE A BLACKJACK DEALER TURNS OVER CARDS.] THE CONTROL FREAK LIST ROLLS ON....
• Strong political instincts and ability to effectively represent the council office on all matters of media relations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft word-processing and presentation software with Web or graphics experience a plus.
• Ability to work in a team environment to plan and implement media strategies.
• BA/BS in related area such as communications, policy/governmental studies, political science or history preferred.
Salary: We offer competitive compensation and an excellent benefits package commensurate with experience. [I bet the CM doesn't even know what "commensurate" means.]
