Wow, Chris Essel really seemed out of her element and the "deer in headlights" cliche applied during the recent CD 2 City Council candidate forums throughout the city.
Although I was a grassroots candidate who was running against the top money raiser in the election, I still felt really bad for her in the way she was received by the local community at these forums that are attended by many of the more politically aware community members, as opposed to the people who voted for her based on fliers. (Tough rooms.)
But she certainly didn't really go into Zuma or Tamar mode where you really pour it on and stick up for yourself.
And I teased Chris throughout the campaign, "Like you really need this? Like you need to sit here and schlep it out with Zuma Dogg and Miriam Folger at these forums. You had NO idea it would be like this, did you?"
And despite what she said in response each time (at least she appreciated my humor and wasn't offended by it, like some other uptight politicians)...it's true!
Chris may be good at what she is good at, but that doesn't mean she is an experienced political campaign debater. She doesn't have that slick Assemblyspeak ability like Alarcon, Wesson, Villaraiogsa and Krekorian.
She isn't good at firing back with slick, smooth answers like the career politicians.
Chris called me to personally let me know she appreciated my blog post from yesterday where I wrote a campaign speech ZUMA DOGG thinks she should say, based on a phone conversation I had with her that turned into a Zuma Dogg "grill-fest" where I fired away with the questions on things I was interested in knowing in my decision about her as a city council candidate.
And as I previously mentioned, it didn't come across in the forums or in fliers the way it came across in a real phone conversation; and it was just that...a conversation. It wasn't before a crowd and it wasn't part of an official conversation. I called her on her cell phone to let her know it would be good if she went on Kevin James' show, this time. (More like it would be disastrous if she DIDN'T.) And as we were wrapping it up, I just asked her some questions about her career at Paramount, because I'm interested in the industry know it's a tough nut to crack. And when I hung up, I felt THAT was the stuff that people should be hearing in the way that she was saying it.
So the fact that she isn't a slick politician with a lot of experience in front of debate crowds like experienced and trained politicians like Krekorian and Galatzan (and Alarcon and Garcetti and Villaraigosa and the rest of them) might make her a bad candidate, but doesn't mean she would be a bad councilmember...even though I'm not saying it means she would be a good one, either.
I really think Chris just isn't used to having to be a shameless self-promoter like like Garcetti, Greuel, Dogg, Hahn and the rest of us. Maybe she has a little class and dignity and didn't want to describe her career achievement publicly the way Zuma Dogg was able to get her to admit to.
So next thing I can tell you in my evaluation of Chris as City Councilmember: I think she's a lot more on the ball and far more outstanding and impressive than just about all the other current councilmembers, including Wendy. (Sorry Wendy.) I can see her outshining most (if not all) of the other current councilmembers.
I know people are concerned about city hall connections and contributions from developers and whatnot, and that's still to be evaluated and weighed.
But seriously, must be pretty frustrating for Ms. Essel who has such a distinguished career at such a high level to have to be dragged through the muck with ZD, Miram and all the haters who like a good WWE show.
I think we have someone who is inexperienced at running in elections, who hired the same old tired political hacks to make it happen for her. And these outside candidates, like Chris don't know how to run a campaign so they are beholden to the advice of their political advisers. And the consultants tend to scoff at and discount the grass roots crowd.
So ZD has been trying to get to Chris to try and let her know the value of things like Kevin James' show and that I hope her operatives don't blow it, this time around, because it's a different dynamic and different election entirely now, and her political consultants didn't get out any of the things that impressed me most about Chris based on the phone conversation.
Chris told me she is going on Kevin's radio show, and she knows she tanked in the forums. So, I told her to watch some Zuma Dogg "public comment videos" from City Hall and try to be more outgoing and shameless like the rest of us because you HAVE to be able to turn it on and deliver when the room is DEAD and AGAINST you. (Just ask ZD!)
Maybe I'll take Chris to the library and make her sing "I Will Always Love You" in front of everyone. Or walk through a shopping mall singing and dancing like Justin Timberlake in the food court. THEN, maybe she'll be fired up and ready to be herself and stick up for herself in public forums and on the radio. (Maybe she can sit in with me and Matt Dowd at Venice Beach for a song...she's a musician!)
So for now, there is a lot of vetting for the community to do on Essel vs Krekorian. But I really do feel a lot of community members are overly nutty and wacky and irrational and that always causes me to dig deeper and not get reverse-bamboozled and throw the wrong candidate under the bus because a bunch of Jerry Springer fans like to see a bunch of chairs thrown around.
SUMMARY: At this point, in my evaluation of Christine Essel in the context of HER only, not contrasting her to Krekorian, but on her own merits, I feel she must be one hell of an outstanding individual to rise through the ranks in the business world the way she did. WOW...Corporate Hollywood on the financial side...NOT an easy crowd to impress. I mean, common people, seriously...look around the room at these forums who is passing judgement on HER. LOL! She really DOES have a hell of a lot of class for not just telling off the whole room.
And when I look around the horse shoe, I'd rather have her on my team than about 13 others. In other words, I think she possesses the skill and ability lacking most in council chambers.
I know this sickens a lot of my fans and readers that I am saying nice things about Chris and not hammering her. But the other opponent isn't Zuma Dogg or a grassroots canidate, it's Paul Krekorian, so you are going to have to do better than, "She's endorsed my Wendy." I don't think Krekorian is some guy who is going to be standing up to the machine or saying "No" to anything. So I don't think I'm exactly screwing it up for any true reformer. If anything, an argument can be made that Krekorian is much worse than Essel.
But for now, this post is just called as seen from a political strategy standpoint. And I'm just trying to pass along what I am finding, as I am finding it out, as someone who is taking time to research my decision by going direct to the source, as usual, instead of having everything filtered.

L.A. DAILY BLOG ENDORSES DAVID SALTSBURG (ZUMA DOGG) IN TODAY'S LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCIL ELECTION
[Pictured: LA City Council Candidate David Saltsburg on KNBC 4 (Zuma Dogg)]
Today is the special election for the Los Angeles City Council District 2 seat that was left vacant by Wendy Greuel when she became controller recently.
L.A. Daily Blog endorses David Saltsburg (Zuma Dogg) and urges you to get out to vote and urge your friends to vote today if they live in the San Fernando Valley (Valley Glen, Valley Village, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Sunland-Tujunga, North Hollywood, Lake View Terrace, Shadow Hills) to get out and vote for David.
Thank you!
"Zuma Dogg has done a lot of good for the people of Los Angeles. He's a good man." - Dennis Zine
"Local legend, Zuma Dogg speaks the truth. He's been fighting for you for years. He's on TV more than Regis Philbin." - Doug McIntyre/KABC radio
"Zuma Dogg is a good candidate. Zuma Dogg understands City Hall. Zuma Dogg is passionate. Zuma Dogg would be a good representative. It would be great to have the tenacity and bravery of Zuma Dogg in the horseshoe." - Kevin James/KRLA radio
"Zuma Dogg is not only one of the most recognizable figures at City Hall, cordially greeted by passersby, including security guards and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, he also has the ear of high-level insiders, who feed him information in the hope that he’ll expose, and possibly stop, one questionable government project or another. In his first years on the scene, he was quietly derided by insiders, including a gaggle of journalists who attend council meetings. His persistence, and now, even critics must admit, his growing expertise on city policy and city government, have changed all that. Masked avenger: Once derided, Zuma Dogg earned respect on public access TV." - LA WEEKLY

Hollywood Production "LOCATIONISTA" Blasts Email Support for Zuma Dogg To Union Workers!
Here's an interesting email that is going around from someone who is a Hollywood "Locationista."
Please consider this:
I like the Dark Horse Candidate - Zuma Dogg - in this race.
Sure, he's a fierce grassroots candidate - extreme - wired - maybe even manic when he was at the depths of his trough of frustration and zeal to get to the bottom of the mediocrity that IS our City Hall and it's 'decision makers' - but his story is REAL and his impact and intelligence about this town and what it will take to fix it are REAL.
He's "wild - but dialed" (IN - that is -- he knows the issues facing this city INSIDE OUT)
Don't be surprised if he makes a SIGNIFICANT showing tomorrow (mark my words! He might be in the runoff!!). But think on this, locationistas: YOUR VOTES for ZD will make HEADLINES if he does well and IF it becomes known that YOU helped him get there......why?
* No grassroots candidate has ever gotten past the power complex. Even if he doesn't quite make it -- the story is big if he gets close and if YOU are part of the reason why.
* ZD's ultimate endorsement of a candidate in the runoff will/would be COVERED in the press if he does well....and I've already floated it past him that endorsing Paul K and mentioning Paul's strong position on film friendliness in the industry's hometown as part of the reason for that endorsement will/would be covered as well. (& he's taking this request seriously!)
* If by some miracle ZD is IN the runoff and thanks this community - then Heck -- "stop the presses!"
Make no mistake -- and THINK ABOUT IT!
* It is not a wasted vote in the Primary to make a statement en masse to support a grassroots candidate. Even if your fave (Chris E or Paul K) don't end up in the runoff, EITHER of them are FILM FRIENDLY candidates, so you have someone worth supporting in the final election no matter what.
* Leveraging your community's votes into press coverage for hometown resurgence and loyalty to film friendliness is worth the gamble that supporting ZD might bring forth.
* There are really very very FEW communities like this. Why not test your grassroots power to persuade by swinging a bloc vote to ZD and see what happens! Live a little! Power to the People.
* Check out his website. Check out his Passion. Check out his Intelligence on ALL the issues facing LA at this difficult time. Don't just be a boring single issue voter. You have no guarantee that only one of the 15 Council office holders can make a meaningful difference to the issues facing our industry, even if many if not most of the others share those sentiments. This is a Strong Executive Mayoral City Government System in case you haven't noticed. The Council is often just a clown court of mediocrity in such a system. Shaking things up, however, can be suddenly noticed by a GREAT number of people NATIONWIDE. Why not try to shake this tree? You have nothing to lose and an unknown HUGE positive grab bag of possibilities to gain by swinging your community voice to the grassroots candidate with most moxie and devotion to the citizenry - ZUMA DOGG.
* You won't have a chance like this again. ZD is moving on with his life and won't be the intense presence EVERY day at City Council like he HAS for the LAST 3 YEARS any longer. It's too intense and not a healthy fixation, albeit the unintended benefits and truths he's discovered and given voice to along the way. BE PART OF THE STORY. Be part of history.

LA Weekly Weighs In on ZUMA DOGG at City Hall!
LA WEEKLY ON ZUMA DOGG (David Saltsburg):
Zuma Dogg is not only one of the most recognizable figures at City Hall, cordially greeted by passersby, including security guards and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, he also has the ear of high-level insiders, who feed him information in the hope that he’ll expose, and possibly stop, one questionable government project or another.
“I’m hearing rumors of a hiring freeze over fire and police!” Zuma Doggs yells into the microphone. “Will the council member who has that idea please raise his hand because I’d like to say it’s the stupidest, dumb idea! It’s outrageous! How can you put a hiring freeze on fire and police? It’s the first line of defense of public safety and the city, and here’s why I’m really upset! You did nothing but put up high-density [apartment and condo] projects! High density! With millions of people! So you’re prepared for all of these people! You must keep up with the fire and police hiring to go with the population boom!”
After his allotted two minutes are over, Zuma Dogg takes a breath and returns to the back of the council chamber, where strangers, who enjoyed the hard time he was giving to city leaders over the crowded new housing erected in L.A., give him the thumbs-up, shake his hand.
In his first years on the scene, because he sometimes slept in his van, he was quietly derided by insiders, including a gaggle of journalists who attend council meetings, the subtext being, who cares what some homeless guy thinks?
Zuma Dogg fought the oppressive, tightly controlled L.A. City Council meetings presided over by Council President Garcetti, who had banned video cameras. After security guards tried to stop Zuma Dogg from taping the council deliberations, he railed against the big shots for months, slamming Garcetti as “Garshady” on his show and on his blog. “It was crazy,” Zuma Dogg says. “Whatever happened to free speech in this country?” He prevailed against Garcetti’s rules, and now brings his JVC camera to every council meeting, as can any member of the public thanks to him.
His persistence, and now, even critics must admit, his growing expertise on city policy and city government, have changed all that.

YOU CAN FINALLY SEND THE BIGGEST MESSAGE EVER TO VILLARAIGOSA, CITY HALL AND THE STATE: MAKE ZUMA DOGG THE COUNCILMEMBER ON TUESDAY.
No wonder LA Weekly said, "it says something about this race, and how much it is worrying City Hall, that an elected school board member like Galatzan openly prefers to be counted as part of the Grass-roots Eight, with people like Zuma Dogg, rather than as part of the Machine Two, with Krekorian and Essel."
YES, Zuma Dogg likes to be lumped in with Zuma Dogg and you can vote for the real thing and get the person who has been saying it all along, not just repeating what I have BEEN saying during a campaign. ELECT THE TEMPLATE! ELECT ZUMA!
Tell everyone! Vote Zuma Dogg on Tuesday for L.A. City Council (CD2).
AND NOW, since LA WEEKLY is a major news publication, I will allow for some general public comment from the community. (Here's the most recent email from today as a random sample.):
* Amazing Zuma Dogg! Thanks to you for giving hope and sustenance to those among us all who yearn to act out our frustrations w/ the "big lie." I've admired your tenacious willingness to yell truth to power and let us all know not to underestimate the mediocrity of those running the city while also exposing, what I like to call "the audacity of the mendacity." You mis-spelled unprecedented and roughshod - Ha! But you are a genius and an artist and a civic treasure.
[It can never be ALL good! But, YES...I'm a genius and civic treasure according to this person, so be nice to me! I'm a CIVIC TREASURE!]
ELECT THE "CIVIC TREAURE" TO PROTECT THE CIVIC TREASURY!
"Genius, prophet, soothsayer, hero, legend"...some of the cheap name calling I have been forced to endure this election season. But I'm o.k. Thanks.

Zuma Dogg Candidate Statement For LA Daily News (I finally learned to speak their language and give them what they want!)
I think I know why Daily News didn't use any of my in-person interview with them from earlier this week in today's article (I call it a free advertisement) for E$$el and Krackwhorian: Instead of making up some laundry list of idealist stuff that is easy to say during a campaign, I gave REAL answers.
So if I want to be covered by Daily News, I better start sounding a lot more like Paul Krekorian and Christine Essel, because they were the only two candidates featured of the ten candidates on the ballot in the article.
So here is my new candidate statement to read from when I am speaking with Daily News:
David Saltsburg: "As City Councilmember of the Valley's CD2, I will end crime. I will ensure there is no graffiti. I will do everything you like, and nothing you don't like. I will ensure perfect constituent services, at all times, with operators standing by to take your complaint 24 hours a day, including on Christmas Eve and New Years Day.
If someone does not fix your problem within 24 hours, you can call me on my cell phone and I will come out to fill that pot hole or trim that tree, myself, after the council meetings.
And finally, I will fix the budget, create jobs, stop pollution, install solar panels on your rooftop out of my own slush fund. And I will ensure that if you are a small business owner, you will make millions and millions of dollars because I will fix the economy.
Ya know...maybe they still won't print any of this -- because City Hall didn't sign off on it for them.
Oh well. Better vote for Essel then, cause she's got the best fliers and made the best promises. (And I like the Santa Clause at Macy's better than the one at Sears!)

Daily News Provides TREMENDOUS DIS-SERVICE To CD 2 Voter In Their (In the tank for city hall) Election Coverage
Is there any doubt the Daily News (these days so thin, it's more like a flier) is in the tank for City Hall in this CD 2 City Council election? They use the guise of "Tuesday is last day to register" as a way of running a free advertisement for the 3 City Hall, kiss-ass, insider, status quo (matter which of the three you pick) candidates.
The fine folks making these editorial decisions at Daily News must REALLY, REALLY look down on their readers and think they are just SO DUMB that they fall for this stuff. I'm sure you will be reading a follow-up article quoting three more of the grass roots candidates in the big SUNDAY issue!
No wonder the newspaper is more like a cheesy, flimsy flier these days. Looks like the whole audience left and I probably just gave them more publicity than their own website gave the article. AND OH YEAH, in case Daily News thinks they are getting away with something, there are already emails being circulated by readers who are outraged about this coverage and it's just gonna turn the Daily News into something worse than LA Times in people's mind. I AM SURE YOU WILL SEE BETTER COVERAGE OF THIS VALLEY CITY COUNCIL ELECTION IN THE LOS ANGELES TIMES. WAIT AND SEE!
Here's the joke free ad that Daily News ran today under the guise of "journalism." LOL! No wonder my blog skyrocketed to #2 in the Statewide rankings. People in Los Angeles area are STARVING for some real coverage of City Hall that isn't being done by sell-out, no character, cowards. I'd rather blog unpaid and sleep on the street and maintain a shred of integrity and dignity than have to become a Daily News staffer and have to be a complete spineless-coward-sellout. THE AUTHOR COULDN'T EVEN PUT THEIR NAME ON THE ARTICLE. It's called, "Daily News Wire Service." (LOL!)
Tuesday is last day to register for Council District 2 vote
ELECTION: Hopefuls seek to fill the term of Wendy Greuel.
Daily News Wire Services (Because no one wanted to put their name on this.)
Updated: 09/04/2009 (The day, the neeeeeewspapers died!)
Residents of the northeast San Fernando Valley have until Tuesday to register to vote in the Sept. 22 special election to fill Wendy Greuel's 2nd District City Council seat.
Greuel became city controller in July. The winner of the special election will finish out the two years remaining on her City Council term.
To vote, one must be a citizen of the United States and 18 years old by election day. Registered voters, who moved into the district recently or changed their names, must re-register by Sept. 8.
Ten candidates are running in the election: state Assemblyman Paul Krekorian; former Paramount Pictures executive Christine Essel; Los Angeles Unified school board member Tamar Galatzan; Jozef "Joe" Thomas Essavi, a member of Los Angeles County's Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Commission; neighborhood council members Michael McCue and Mary Benson; community organizer Pete Sanchez; neighborhood advocate David "Zuma Dogg" Saltsburg; candy factory owner Frank Sheftel; and businessman Augusto Bisani.
[AND THAT'S AS MUCH AS YOU ARE GOING TO HEAR ABOUT ANY OF THESE CANDIDATES FROM THE DAILY FLIER.]
Greuel [who's endorsement is actually a HUGE negative, but Essel doesn't realize that because she is so out of touch cause she has no idea what she is doing) has endorsed Essel, as have former Mayor Richard Riordan (who also backed and endorsed Antonio Villaraigosa BOTH TIMES...Richard must be losing it a little, cause he still endorsed Antonio for a second term) and City Council members Jan Perry, Janice Hahn, Herb Wesson, and state Sen. Fran Pavley, among others. (I think people actually will look at Perry, Hahn & Wesson's endorsement as a flag that Essel is CLEARLY the candidate you must avoid most.)
Krekorian has been endorsed by the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, the San Fernando Valley Democratic Party, Los Angeles County, Councilman Paul Koretz, U.S. Reps. Brad Sherman and Loretta Sanchez, Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and several of his colleagues in the state Legislature. (Add it all up, and you have all the people who created the mess and stood by like helpless losers who are backing this guy.)
On her campaign Web site, Essel said (EMPHASIS ON "SAID") she would focus on cutting business taxes to create new jobs (after she was just in charge of driving them all away at Paramout); reform city departments to cut through red tape (how is "Empty Vessel" Essel going to achieve THAT goal? I didn't know she was "Bewitched" and could just wiggle her nose and make it happen. CHRIS IS REALLY, REALLY GOOD AT SAYING ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. So is Santa Clause); and allow small business to thrive; ensure the delivery of basic city services to her constituents; stop waste, fraud and abuse; and fight for honest and ethical government. (OH WOW CHRIS, can I say that, too? After all, words are easy to speak. I'm going to allow small business to thirve (HOW CHRIS? ARE YOU GOING TO PRINT MONEY AND GIVE IT TO PEOPLE TO SPEND, OR JUST GIVE THEM SOME OF YOURS? YOU ARE SO OUT OF TOUCH, CHRIS, I CONSIDER IT A DANGER TO PUBLIC SAFETY...SERIOUSLY! And oh yeah, you are going to ENSURE basic services, because you say so during a campaign, AND...you are going to STOP fraud, waste and abuse, like Superman holding out his arm and stopping a speeding train. I AM CONVINCED YOU WILL DO THAT CHRIS, AS THE TOP INSIDER PICKED BY CITY HALL TO DO WHAT THEY TELL YOU!
Oh yeah, I'm just SO SURE Chris Essel is going to crack down on Antonio and Council's fraud, waste and abuse. CHRIS...you make Obama's campaign laundry list of idealistic bullshit sound realistic. CHRIS...GET REAL! This isn't High School Student Council. I WOULDN"T BE TAKING OUT LOANS AGAINST YOUR HOUSE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. EVEN IF YOU MAKE IT INTO A RUN-OFF...VOTERS WILL NEVER ALLOW YOU IN THAT COUNCIL SEAT. )
On Krackwhorian's campaign Web site (WHY IS DAILY NEWS QUOTING A CAMPAIGN WEBSITE AS "NEWS?" ISN'T THAT CALLED AN ADVERTISEMENT?), he said he would help craft a budget that prioritizes public safety, neighborhood quality of life and transportation that works; cut bureaucracy and demand accountability from every city department and commission, and especially the City Council; promote smart development that preserves the character of neighborhoods, and brings together housing, transportation and jobs; cut taxes to encourage businesses; and bring transparency and ethics to City Hall. [PAUL...WHY DIDN'T YOU DO ANY OF THAT AS ASSEMBLYMAN? YOU STOOD BY AS KAREN BASS' TOP ASSEMBLYMEMBER AND DROVE THE STATE INTO FINANCIAL RUIN. YOU DIDN'T DO SHIT EXCEPT SPEND, SPEND, SPEND AND COME UP WITH EVERY LAME EXCUSE WHY NOT A PENNY COULD BE CUT FOR ANYTHING.) PAUL YOU ARE A NICE GUY IN PERSON BUT I MUST SAY YOU ABSOLUTELY SICKEN ME AS A POLITICIAN. YOU LITERALLY MAKE ME WANT TO VOMIT WHEN I HEAR YOU SPEAK. I know most people dislike Chris Essel the most, but Paul Krekorian ABSOLUTELY MAKES ME MORE NAUSEOUS THAN RICHARD ALARCON.
I really hope Krekorian wins, so I can IMMEDIATELY begin saying, "I TOLD YOU SO" and tell you how 100% right I was, again!
And to "Daily News Flier": OUT OF TEN CANDIDATES ALL YOU COULD DO FOCUS ON TWO EMPTY HEADED LOSERS WHO WILL SAY ANYTHING DURING A CAMPAIGN SEASON. LOL!
Zuma,
part of the issue is that we know
of other bloggers submitting
favorable praises of you emailed
to Mayor Sam over a long while now
too many of us do not see them.
we know you can use all the votes
you can get that is why we think
it is best to let you be aware
of this pressing issue.
we can post all the nice praises
emailing them only to you
on your blog.
then if you should show them on
your blog those that are not
for you like petra kristen and
others will mock it and twist it.
the important thing is that you
have supporters here and there but
mayor sam needs to play fair.
many of us are passing the good
word about you your blogging and
your voluntary career at the la
city council meaning and how long
you have been influential there
side by side with the corrupt
policy makers.
it is good to hear they are not
denying you anymore & that they're
starting to feel the heat as your
getting closer and closer in their
sacred space.
the more people care to put
out the good word in your favor
now the better you stand to win
zuma be cautious of petra kristen.
they are showing their true colors to
too many of us from different social
circles here in la interested in
voting for the best cd 2 candidate
many of course leaning more and
more towards you.
hey for too many of us this is
no time to play games with the
voters who take the time to
learn about the la politics and
candidate race and who are making
time to blog. we are all too
very busy to play games seriously.
bias game players who have blogs
who say they are serious are a joke
and they only make a mockery of
politic blogs, showing themselves to
the voter community.
zuma your blog is tops with many
because your bashing the corrupt
posers of la political circles.
may you succeed where others have
and are failing.
we believe that there must surely
be a short circuit in her brain
that is not connecting with the
rest of the brain neurons not well.
you know alarcon already feels you
won. hopefully the rest of the la
council and mayor can see that the
joke is on them.
we look forward to seeing your
partner in crime matt dowd soon too
playing the la council like a yo-yo.
your postings to day are full of
good information.

ELECT ZUMA DOGG TO RUN INTERVENTION ON L.A. CITY COUNCIL ADDICTION TO STATUS QUO (The Dr. Drew of L.A. City Politics)
Matt Dowd weighs in on L.A. City golf cart concession agenda item from today's meeting. Zine said he was never lobbied so hard on anything, from both sides, in his eight years at Council and sure seemed to be about one of the biggest deals I have seen made by Council. Here's what Matt has to add on this shady item: I was in committee when that golf cart vending item came through the agenda. Bong is trying to hose off the concession to his buddies. they been tryin for months. in committee was a joke. Janice just went along, I couldn't believe it. that committee was the biggest problem with the City. only Janice and Tom sitting, because Jan Perry was never there with those two, so they ran it, that's fucked up. Tom tried to hose in his golf buddies with the cart concession. Effective Sept 1 though all the committees changed. NOW Wesson and Reyes are on the Arts Parks and Aging Committee, so that's why LeBong's stuff is getting thrown out now. I need Councilman Saltsburg to fight for my vending concession on Venice y'all. - Matt Dowd
ZUMA DOGG RANTS ON BIG 3 CITY HALL INSIDER CANDIDATES TO LA WEEKLY REPORTER: Thanks to LA Weekly for calling Zuma Dogg for some quotes on a few of the candidates. "Goes Along" Galtzan, Krackwhorian and E$$el were making me especially cranky at the time of the call. My cell phone charger is broke, so I had to hustle the AT&T store for a free call to give the interview. YES, the candidate who can do MORE with LESS! Outside the box thinking to get the job done! AND ZD MAKES THE INTERVIEW AND SLAMS THOSE WHO DESERVE IT MOST! (The Three Stooges: Paul/Moe, Chris/Larry, Tamar/Curly)
TAMAR'S HARDLY ATTENDED FUNDRAISER: I saw someone who was at Tamar's fundraiser, last night. Says Galatzan only had about 15 people there I am told. And I know who a couple of them were (her existing supporters), so she's not exactly setting the district on fire.
ELECT ZUMA DOGG TO RUN INTERVENTION ON L.A. CITY COUNCIL ADDICTION TO STATUS QUO: I was thinking about Los Angeles City Council and the siginficance if David Saltsburg (Zuma Dogg) is put in the council seat by The People on September 22, 2009.
And the reason I thought of the significance, is because I was thinking of the poor souls of L.A. City Council who are boiling to death in their own addiction!
The city is headed straight for the buzzsaw and it appears as though they are all standing around helpless to do anything about anything.
Look at the budget they are still struggling with. They NEVER should have been in this predicament. Even Councilmember Bill Rosendahl couldn't take it today, as council was forced to make a complicated, last minute decision on the golf cart concession operators at the city golf course as he blurted out in frustration, ""Why do we always wait till the last day to do something around here!" WELCOME TO THE ZUMA DOGG CLUB, BILL!
And I look at the fifteen councilmembers (fourteen, for now until the CD 2 election) and say to myself, these aren't bad people. They can't be this much of a bunch of dumb f*ck ups? And I mean that. So what it comes down to is these people are just sick addicts. Addicted to the staus quo. Addicted to business as ususal. Addicted to simply being able to get away with it cause we could afford it and it was just accepted.
NOW IT'S NOT ACCEPTABLE (as if it ever were), BECAUSE WE CANNOT AFFORD IT, AND THE FRAUD, WASTE AND ABUSE (and corruption) IS BEING EXPOSED AND LIKE AN ADDICT WHO HAS HIT ROCK BOTTOM, IT IS TIME TO CHANGE YOUR BEHAVIOR BECAUSE YOU CANNOT CARRY ON AS YOU USED TO IN YOUR ADDICTED BEHAVIOR. But now you can't stop. You have become like a functional addict who keeps robbing others and losing your soul to keep your addiction going.
And now you don't even know how to do anything else or behave any differently.
SO THAT'S WHAT ZUMA DOGG IS FOR!
HE IS THE CITY COUNCIL INTERVENTION SENT BY THE PEOPLE TO START PRESSING THE BUTTON AND TALKING LIKE DR. DREW!
And it will be such a message to City Hall if you send me into that council seat, that would add leverage to the seat. Can you imagine, "Sorry, although it would be easy for me to go along with the other councilmembers on this one, I have to remember this (insert b.s. council issue) is what The People of CD 2 sent me here to do. So I have to vote "NO" on this, and here is why the other councilmembers should remember The People are watching how YOU vote, too." And maybe slowly we can start to break up all these unanymous votes, and occasionally stop something from getting passed. (Like when they wait until the last day for something and need a unanymous vote or else it has to come back the next week for a second vote...BUT that means it will be too late. So sometimes ONE NO vote can stop something.
END CITY COUNCIL'S STATUS QUO ADDICTION!
SEND THEM AN INTERVENTION ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd!

David Saltsburg (Zuma Dogg) Addresses TOP Issue To Be Addressed As L.A. City Councilmember (Vote "Zuma Dogg" Sept 22nd in CD 2)
Rather than focus on them at this point, I want people to know what is important to me as someone walking in the door of Council chambers as councilmember.
I started with THIS post yesterday on Neighborhood Councils and my commitment to them, because I know it is such a frustrating issue for participants.
David Saltsburg (Zuma Dogg) Speaks on His Commitment To Neighborhood Council As City Councilmember
AND, even though, neighborhood council infrastructure is not the most pressing issue in all reality as we face some pretty big fiscal budgetary issues, I wanted to start with the NC post, the same way a new country starting from scratch after devastation (Wendy Greuel as CM) is to announce, "we have phone lines set up and are open for communication."So I wanted to let you know, that the first thing, on day one of "Councilmember Zuma Dogg" includes even more immersion with NC participants than ever, and read the rest of the post above for more on that.
So once the lines of communication are open and people know that: I asked myself, "When I walk into the office on the first day, what is the single most important issue that I need to get into.
AND THE PROBLEM IS, it's not always the sexy, backyard issue that is 500 feet away from your doorstep. And sometimes it isn't even something tangible that you can see the result of, or have a ribbon cutting ceremony for.
SO I WANT TO PREFACE THIS POST AS SAYING, THIS IS THE SALAD YOU HAVE TO EAT BEFORE THE MAIN ENTREE THAT YOU WILL PROBABLY LIKE MUCH MORE.
But this issue I am about to address puts EVERYTHING else in the community at risk. It puts jobs, public safety, libraries, parks, general services and EVERYTHING else quality of life related:
THE BUDGET!
I HAVE SOME OTHER IDEAS AND WILL ADDRESS THOSE IN A FUTURE POST. But this is enough on this topic for now. Zuma Dogg for City Council says although it's not the backyard "warm and fuzzy" issue you want to hear about regarding what I think the most important issue to be addressed as CM on day one, IT'S THE BUDGET AND PENSION MONEY!!! EVERYTHING ELSE IS AT RISK!And I will be brief here, or at least brief for someone who may soon be a councilmember: Almost three years ago, I did an article for LA Weekly on Grand Ave Project. I was privileged to the inside memo on the plan and I noticed that LACERS pension money was invested in this project that I happened to think was a big turkey, and it has gone belly up since then. I caused such a stink, that they eventually pulled the LACERS money out of the project.
But it illustrated the exposure to pension money in risky projects. It turns out ZD found out the pension money was invested in overly-risky Wall Street funds and we all know about placement agents (Wetherly Captial) and "packing" the pension board with the four Villaraigosa pension appointees who helped funnel the money to the dark side.
I warned of the pending global economic meltdown (that was ahead due to subprime foreclosures and the rising price of oil overseas and the credit derivatives market) toward the goal of serious belt tightening and even predicted that the city would go bankrupt and would not even be able to provide basic services and rates would skyrocket.
So now that this is not officially brief, anymore. I guess I am perfect to be an L.A. City Councilmember, because I had to tell you that I not only figured this out on my own through research and speaking with LACERS members in chambers; BUT, showed up and DEMANDED for an investigation as to how the money was being invested and warned of the whole meltdown, which ended up to play out exactly as predicted.
SO IT WAS PRETTY OBVIOUS TO ME, IF YOU HAD SPOKEN WITH THE PEOPLE I HAD SPOKEN WITH; AND CHOSE TO EVALUATE THE GLOBAL ECONOMY, TO FIGURE OUT HOW THE LOCAL ECONOMY WOULD BE AFFECTED SO YOU TURNED OUT TO HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD? So what if I had been CM the whole time and was able to create a motion to call in these experts for an accounting of exactly what the HELL was going on.
Cause the result is that we are now on the verge of bankruptcy and the mayor and city council approved a budget that is padded with "smoke and mirror" inflated revenue projections, includes concessions from unions that have not only NOT been agreed to; but have threatened to sue over it; and it takes about six months to fire anyone, even if you wanted to...and NOTHING HAS BEEN AGREED TO AND TIME IS RUNNING OUT...AND THE SITUATION COMPOUNDS EACH MONTH.
So the first thing I think I would get to the bottom of by speaking with CM Parks and whichever other CMs might have a CLUE as to what is going on; and speak with the city employees in the appropriate departments who know what the HELL is going on (like Sally Choi of LACERS) -- AND SEE EXACTLY WHERE WE STAND AND WHAT HAS TO BE DONE AND WHAT THE HARD OPTIONS ARE AT THIS POINT.
BECAUSE THE FIRST MOTION I NEED TO CREATE IS, "Measures that need to be taken to prevent loss of jobs and services throughout the City." And don't say that this isn't a CD 2 issue, because you end up getting your property taxes and fees hiked and new fees created and parking meter increases and all that to help pay for this mess. AND, if we have to close down parks, libraries, fire companies and all the other city services that will be affected -- and further job loss...WELL THAT'S GONNA AFFECT ALL OF CD 2 A LOT! You have already seen it!
CRYSTAL BALL WHERE THIS IS HEADED: When I am asked about the budget gap and what to do, I merely project ahead as to what the only option will be because it's not like these clowns will be able to navigate through this at the micro-level: ENTIRE DEPARTMENTS WILL HAVE TO BE ELIMINATED WHICH WILL ALLOW THE CITY TO REDUCE THE PAYROLL AND FUTURE BENEFITS.
I'm sure all agree that there are city departments that are overly-bureaucratic, (duplication), non-essential and wasteful. Will have to start there.
ALSO, sorry Wendy Greuel and Villaraigosa, you are going to have to start collecting for things like the $250,000 a month LATE FEE on Related Cos, "Grand Ave Project" and all the other un-collected debts and fines that you ignore (LIKE CLEAR CHANNEL BILLBOARD VIOLATIONS), while you stick it to the constituents. ARE YOU CRAZY???? MAN, you better hope I don't win, because I'm not going to be TOO disruptive, BUT I DEFINITELY HAVE TO CALL ATTENTION TO THIS AND PLEASE ASK CITY COUNCIL AND VILLARIGOSA TO OPEN THEIR BLIND EYE. THAT'S WHAT THE PEOPLE SENT ME HERE FOR!
So entire departments and uncollected debt, fines and fees will have to be addressed, or my next motion will be for a recall of Villaraigosa on the ballot!

And don't say that this isn't a CD 2 issue, because you end up getting your property taxes and fees hiked and new fees created and parking meter increases and all that to help pay for this mess.
And now...on with the countdown.
NEXT POST: Zuma Dogg For L.A. City Council. Planning and Bldg and Safety and how they violate the community plan and everything is now "complaint driven" and community members want to get to the bottom of the process toward the goal of more efficient results.
